This is in fact a double monograph, the first entitled 'Short cuts to an ecclesiastical career' by Kirsi Salonen, focusing on the role of the Apostolic Penitentiary at the Roman curia, and the second 'A disorderly process lacking dignity? Ordinations in the papal curia during the pontificate of Paul II (1464-71)' by Jussi Hanska, in which material on the subject of priestly ordination from the Apostolic Chamber is analysed. The period under discussion is that of the pontificates of Pius II (1458-64) and Paul II (1464-71). The evidence adduced here is that of papal documentation, preserved in the archives of the Apostolic Penitentiary, which issued dispensations and absolutions, and the Camera apostólica, which was responsible for controlling the quality of candidates for the priesthood and ordination. …
