S64.00. The flourishing devotional and pious literatures of medieval continental France have been much neglected, in favour of the charms of narrative and the seductions of lyric and drama. Maureen Boulton points out, rightly, that scholars of Anglo-Norman have been much more open to that domain - and this volume, an anthology of translations with some edited texts, makes a useful, and tempting, contribution to our growing understanding of the devotional world of Anglo-Norman England in the thirteenth century. It consists of translations into assured and readable modern English of three complete treatises: Les Enfaunces Jesu Crist (edited by Boulton for the ANTS in 1986); La Vengeance Nostre Seigneur, Hugues de Lincoln-, sizeable segments of Grosseteste's Chasteau d'amour and his translation of Suidas-, and a series of six Passion Meditations and Prayers. …
