Apr. 20: A Washington Post reporter who had been in Iranian prison since July 22, 2014, was finally charged with a crime. Jason Rezaian was charged with espionage, a claim his lawyers denied. Rezaian had been the Post's Tehran bureau chief since 2012. [NYT, 4/20]

Apr. 30: After Iran seized the Maersk Tigris container ship in the Strait of Hormuz on April 28, the United States deployed warships and aircraft to escort American cargo ships passing through the Persian Gulf. Although the ship was flying the flag of the Marshall Islands, Iran's actions in the Strait of Hormuz had complicated the nuclear negotiations due to the increased militarization of the waterway. May 7: The Maersk Tigris was released from an Iranian port in Bandar 'Abbas and continued to its original destination of Jabal 'Ali in the United Arab Emirates. Iranian patrol boats seized the vessel on April 28 as it passed through the Strait of Hormuz. Maersk reported that the ship and its crew were in good condition. [WSJ, 5/7]

In Mahabad, a city in Iran's Kurdistan Province, protesters set fire to a hotel after the death of an employee. The 25-year-old woman died under suspicious circumstances, falling to her death from a fourth floor window of the hotel. …
