On February first, I went outside

Stepping through pot-cheese snow to look for sprouts,

And there they were,

The tiny dark green tips of snowdrop-spears.

I took a snapshot with my pocket camera,

Intending to print it up

And send it north as I do every year

To let you know that spring is coming soon,

A little earlier here than it arrives

At your New England farm

Perched high against the hillside, house and barn,

Vegetable patch and meadows and dark pond.

Now it is April. February, March

Were lost to ice storms, blizzards, inland squalls,

And those small stunted sprouts

Could only freeze and unfreeze, freeze again

And wait till April broke: now here they are.

But you were lost before I had a chance

To send your picture north. …
