This collection of twenty-four traditional Cypriot dance tunes evidences the special character of the music of Turkish-speaking Cypriots, which is both distinct from Turkish music and connected to the music of Greek-speaking Cypriots. The collection in this respect reflects a broader context in which Cypriots struggle to locate musical traditions indigenous to Cyprus while acknowledging Turkish and Greek musics, which they also recognize as traditional. The performers are the Magem Folkdance Group, an ensemble based in Famagusta. And while that city represents a divisive past (its Greek-speaking residents left en masse during the Turkish invasion of 1974), the disc sends unifying messages: a brief look at the track list reveals a number of notably interethnic pieces, including "Karchilamas," "Susta," and "Dillirga. …
