Article excerpt

This volume originated at the 2010 meeting of the International Association for the Study of Irish Literatures (IASIL) at the National University of Ireland-Maynooth, where many of the contributors to this collection presented papers on their work in progress. Our greatest debt is to these scholars: their patience and responsiveness to our many queries and requests are deeply appreciated. We also express our sincerest gratitude to our IASIL colleagues who assisted in peerreviewing the essays: John P. Harrington, Patrick Lonergan, Anna McMullan, Paul Murphy, Christopher Murray, Riana 0'Dwyer, Alexandra Poulain, and Shaun Richards all gave generously of their time and offered valuable insights and advice. IASIL president Margaret Kelleher was supportive of the undertaking from the start and provided words of wisdom and encouragement along the way. We wish to thank Masja Horn of Rodopi publishers for the friendly and efficient way in which she managed communications during the assessment process, and the board of the DQR Studies in Literature series for considering and accepting the collection. We are particularly indebted to the series editor, Dr C.C. Barfoot, for his critical eye and meticulous attention to detail during the editing process. Our thanks must also go to our home universities, the University of MissouriKansas City and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, for supporting our research and scholarly endeavours. …
