My predecessor at MQR, Larry Goldstein, told me to treasure the manuscript submission pool called in the trade "the slush pile." After all, Larry reminded me, Charles Baxter's first published story came to us that way, back in the days before Baxter was a University of Michigan professor we all knew as Charlie and the novelist and story eminence he has become. I have followed Larry's advice-our wonderful interns are told to bring forward any work they think is worth championing, and some of our very best stories, poems, and essays have come to us that way. That kind of profusion of excellence, and our attempt to register it, is not only in the spirit of Larry but also of Charlie, who as a contributing editor, an author who has appeared in our pages, and a friend, has always brought his characteristic combination of generosity and rigor to his engagement with us. …
