This book provides an overview of Antarctic science and governance in a readable and well-illustrated format. Each chapter is written by one or more subject experts and the book is broad in scope. The first chapter summarises the history of exploration and science in Antarctica spanning from Captain James Cook to the International Polar Year. It also includes an interesting section on the place of Antarctica in the humanities and arts. Chapter 2 focuses on the geological history of Antarctica while in chapter 3 we move to the modern environment starting with the Antarctic Ice Sheet.
