"So What Are You Going to Do with That?" Finding Careers Outside Academia. By Susan Basalla and Maggie Debelius. (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2015, Pp. xii, 149. $16.00.)

Given the changing nature of ordained ministry, the subtitle of this book easily could have been "Finding Careers Outside the Church." As one who works with those in formation for priestly ministry in a diocese with lots of part-time positions, this is a very relevant book. As one who has a Ph.D. and is not on a tenure track in a university, it was also a personally valuable read. Susan Basalla and Maggie Debelius are to be commended for opening up such an important and challenging conversation. The question of what one does with an advanced degree is in many ways a personal one that goes to the heart of one's identity and vocation. We seek further education because we are passionate about learning and because we desire to make a difference in the world. As Basalla and Debelius note, if we cannot succeed in the academy and get that coveted tenured position, we may feel as though we have completely failed.

This book is the perfect resource for one who is seeking or wondering about life outside of academia or the church or even just generally wondering how one might put their years of education to use in a new and creative way. The text is simply organized into five chapters, taking the reader from the musing stage to creating a resume and all the way through interviewing and living into a new job. …
