Economic Support of Minority-Owned Businessess or "What Does It Take to Make a Boat Sail?"

The inane question posed above is just an amateurish attempt by the editor to "grab" your attention. I would venture to say that the first response that came to your mind was "wind." Which is a very sound response; but boatmen know that it takes more than wind to make a boat sail. It takes the cooperation and skill of a great many people working together to ensure that sailing is a safe, pleasurable activity. When the question is applied to businesses, or "What does it takes to make a business successful?" "wind" or verbal support is not the deciding criteria for success.

It has amazed me over these past ten years how many of my friends have remarked that they will support Tucker Publications, Incorporated: (a) "When I find a job;" (b) "When I find a better job;" (c) "When I get a raise;" (d) "When I get a big raise;" (e) "When I get some extra money;" (f) When I finish school;" or just plains imply, "I don't have the money." Then there are those who just don't respond. I can count of two hands the number of minority faculty members who have subscribed over the years on a continuous basis to one of the journals we publish (Note: The ABNF Journal is free to all dues paying and honorary members of the Association) or who have asked their school librarian to subscribe. To those who have done more than give "wind to our sails" we say, "Thank you!" To those who still have financial limitations and we realize that all of us have responsibilities we must take care of first and foremost - we say thank you for your verbal support and hope that your situation will improve in the very near future so as to enable you to support a small, female-owned business. …
