This attractive, pocket-sized book has a good balance of eye-catching images and informative text. Instructive introductions to each rock group are followed by entries for 18 igneous, nine metamorphic and 15 sedimentary rocks, most on a single page combining one or more images with information about composition, texture, occurrence and uses. Seven pages on mineral properties are followed by entries for 106 minerals, grouped by chemistry. Again, most are on a single page with an image, list of properties and short section of text. Useful lists of further reading and websites are followed by a glossary and index.

Any reviewer could quibble over the selection of rocks and minerals in a compact book like this. There is no entry for phyllite or granodiorite. …
