IN MEMORIAM: Mario Curreli 1943-2015

From the discussion of his thesis at the University of Pisa in June 1968, for which he was awarded the Ugo Mursia Prize, until January 2015, when he passed away, Mario Curreli dedicated the best part of his intellectual efforts to deepening and spreading knowledge of Conrad through numerous critical studies, translations, and his teaching activity at the Universities of Florence and then Pisa. He edited nearly all of Conrad's texts for the most important Italian publishers: Mursia, Mondadori, the prestigious Classici Bompiani. The last fruit of his activity as an editor is an anthology of Italian criticism on Conrad, Conrad in Italy, on which he worked usque ad finem. The book, which contains the contributions of three generations of Italian Conradians as well as two essays by Mario, will be released by Columbia University Press in fall 2015.

For nearly forty years, Mario was the Italian referent for the Conrad community, whom he met in Pisa in two major conferences: The Ugo Mursia Memorial Lectures in 1983 and 2004.

His Invito alla lettura di Conrad (An Invitation to Read Conrad, Milan: Mursia, 1984; reprinted several times) has been an inspiration for generations of undergraduates and a mine of information for the professional scholar. His translations and meticulous revisions of existing translations of Conrad's books have made Conrad's texts more readable, and, at the same time, philologically accurate. …
