This revised edition of Genesis A aims to provide a thoroughly updated study of the second-longest poem in Old English. The majority of revisions are committed to correcting errors and introducing new material into the introduction and commentary. Doanc's editorial style remains a conservative one, with emendations only where necessary for sense. A useful list collating manuscript readings and emendations across both the first and revised editions is also provided. The most significant changes to the introductory discussion of the manuscript relate to new material on quire construction; the poem's sections; the manuscript's date, origin, and provenance; and the pre- and subsequent history of the manuscript. Doane makes particular use of research by Peter J. Lucas and Leslie Lockett, with the latter's work perhaps having the greatest positive impact on this section. The following shorter discussion of language is also fleshed out, particularly in relation to the poem's date, where Doane draws on R. D. Fulk's linguistic and metrical analyses to great effect.

The introductory discussion of the poem itself is also rewritten in order to respond to critiques and make use of new research. In keeping with the facing-page quotations throughout the edition itself, the emphasis here remains on the relationship between Genesis A and a mixed Latin biblical tradition (Vulgate and Old Latin), with updates throughout and particular engagement with Paul G. …
