With the appearance of book 6, the critical edition of the vast and fascinating Roman de Perceforest is finally complete: definitely cause for scholarly celebration. This marks the first time that the entire text has been available in print in almost half a millenium - the only previous editions being those published by Galliot du Pré and Gille de Gormont in 1528 and 1531-2 respectively - and it has taken some thirty-four years from Jane Taylor's edition of the first half of book 1 in 1979, to the final completion of Roussineau's thirteen-volume edition of the whole. As the growing scholarly attention to the text attests, it has been well worth the wait. As always, Roussineau's edition is meticulously prepared, with critical discussion, linguistic analysis, and detailed analyse du texte provided for book 6, as well as extensive variant readings, critical notes, tables of proper names, aphorisms, and expressions, and a 265-page glossary. …
