Guillaume de Digulleville: Le Dit de la fleur de lis, ed. Frédéric Duval, Mémoires et Documents de l'École des Chartes 95 (Paris: École des Chartes, 2014). 344 pp. ISBN 978-2-35723-044-6. euro35.00. This volume replaces Arthur Piaget's earlier edition of the poem, under the title of Roman de la fleur de lys. It is more accurate to say, however, that Duval provides the first critical edition of Digulleville's short poem of some 1,300 lines, which survives in two manuscripts. Duval's introduction begins by identifying the limitations of the earlier edition, where emendations are often carried out silently and without reference to the textual tradition. Furthermore Piaget's choice of MS A (MS Paris, Bibl. de l'Arsénal 3646) as a base manuscript appears arbitrary, and Duval presents convincing evidence for the better authority of B (MS Paris, BnF Latin 4120). As well as providing a full critical edition based on B, Duval also includes a synoptic parallel edition of the two manuscript witnesses on facing pages to facilitate comparison, along with a useful and detailed introduction, notes, and a glossary. …
