This volume brings together papers delivered at a conference held in 2012 at the University of Leiden to commemorate the contributions of the Dutch art historian Godefridus Hoogewerff (1 884-1963), author of De NoordNederlandsche schilderkunst (1936-1947). Scholarship on ?pre-Eyckian' painting, a concept first given broad currency by Erwin Panofsky, has concentrated on the Southern Netherlands, so a volume dedicated to the pre-Eyckian period in the North is most welcome.
