This volume is the result of a research project, financed by the Italian Ministry of University and Research, called La mimesi di Gerusalemme in Italia: evoca^ioni, riprodugjomi, imita Jwni tra Medioevo e Rinasrímento (The mimesis of Jerusalem in Italy: evocations, reproductions, imitations between the Middle Ages and Renaissance), directed by Franco Cardini. This collection of thirty-five essays (all in Italian except one chapter in English, abstracts in English) has a multidisciplinary character. The first four chapters offer original insight into the use of Jerusalem as a metaphor in late antique and early medieval theology and liturgy, both in the Holy Land and Europe. The remainder of the book deals with specific reproductions of Jerusalem in architecture and other visual arts, as well as with re-evocations within the civic life of medieval and Renaissance cities in Italy. …
