The gearing up of New Zealand universities towards more research outputs - often through established research centres (such as the Centre for Study of Violence at Canterbury University) - can have the fruit in the production of research programmes or in this case an edited volume on Understanding Violence, in which some half of the writing is carried out by the centre's members. The rationale for the volume and its target (beyond a rather bland indication of being aimed at students, professionals, policymakers and the wider community) do not seem to be explicitly stated (although discussion questions posed at the end of chapters indicates a student audience a least in some part). The material of review chapters is couched at an intermediate level and comprises a mix of international and local New Zealand literatures (one exception is that on cyber-violence which overlooks available local data in order to only cover international). Appropriate statistical and other studies are referred to, although sometimes I thought these were slightly dated - but it does after all take a while to progress a MS through the production process. For example, Bradley's chapter on violent crime might have usefully deployed data from the 2008/10/12 General Social Surveys since the now most recent Ministry of Justice victimisation survey would not have been available to him at the time of writing. The volume does not provide a theory-based schema within which the various types/forms of violence covered might have been located, but a good range is provided. …
