The issue of treatment adherence has over the years emerged as one of the most important issues regarding the treatment of schizophrenia, if not becoming the single most important one. That is the case due to a myriad of factors, one of the most blatant being that even the modern best antipsychotics cannot provide any sort of benefit if not being taken at the right dose and at required intervals. On a similar note, although subduing acute schizophrenic symptoms is immensely important, nowadays we have a wide array of psychotropic medicaments that can be used for that purpose. Not to mention that the acute symptoms of schizophrenia tend to be rather noticeable and that leads the patient to the doctor in one way or another. Treatment adherence is a whole new ball game, as it implies far deeper processes in the patient-doctor relationship. Basically, the focus is not just about treatment efficiency or adequate symptom control, but also about the patient's insight into the illness itself and his whole life for that matter, as well as what was already mentioned - the very relationship between the patient and the doctor, which is a rather complicated matter regarding schizophrenia.
