Bipolar disorder (BD) is one of the most complex psychiatric disorders, which often represents a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge in psychiatric clinical practice. According to an old epidemiologic and diagnostic paradigm, prevalence of BD I is about 1% in general population, and prevalence of BD II is about 2%. However, numerous studies have been published in past decade, suggesting that besides BD I and BD II a wide range of clinical presentations can be described as bipolar spectrum. The concept of bipolar spectrum shifts old paradigm towards a new one, with significantly higher number of affected patients.

When it comes to the treatment of BD, clinician often struggles not only with complexity of the disorder itseft, but also with the comorbid psychiatric and general medical conditions, which make treatment even more challenging. Therefore, reliable and up-todate source of relevant data and knowledge about BD is a must for practicing psychiatrists.
