This welcome edition of two of the minor works of Isabel's confessor, Talavera, contributes to our ongoing knowledge of Isabelline treatises and their possible influence on the Queen. Carmen Parilla writes almost 100 pages of introduction, including useful information about Talavera's life and work, and studies of the two treatises edited here. Their fortuitous survival in a single bound copy now in the Lázaro Galdiano Library in Madrid gives us some insight into the mind of the new queen in 1475-1476, when the Portuguese invasion threatened to bring an end to her challenge for the throne. She specifically asked for both works to be prepared for her; the first is an Advent sermon (colación) for the Hieronymite monks in Talavera's care, rewritten for the queen; the second, a longer work on the theme of St John the Evangelist, beloved of Christ in the Gospel. A unifying theme of both works is the eagle, the symbol of St John, and a talisman of the Advent fast and its contemplative nature. …
