Everyone's talking about the Common Core these days. While visiting a school playground, I overheard the following conversation:

"Common Core Standards? Terrible. Horrible. No good. Very bad."

"I agree, Alexander. They're constrictive; I feel like I'm being made to walk in straight lines all the time."

"Madeline, we can figure a way out. I've got a crayon here; let's see what we can come up with."

"Naw, Harold, we need action. Those wild Common Core things must be tamed! We have to show them who's boss!"

"Speaking of bosses, Max, can you believe how gung-ho for the Common Core Miss Trunchbull is?"

"I hate to be a pest, Matilda, but since our recess has been cut in half so that we can work on the Standards, could we just play now?"

"Wowie wow wow, Ramona! Good idea! Junie B. goes first!"

In a middle school cafeteria, the subject was the same:

"The Common Core is a conspiracy, Meg. I've been spying . . ."

"It's more than a conspiracy, Harriet. We're facing evil. We've got to fight IT with every bit of goodness we have. …
