The 'Big Society' was the flagship policy idea of the UK Conservative Party general election 2010 manifesto. The Rt. Hon. David Cameron, Prime Minister, pleaded to create a climate that empowers local people and communities in building a 'big society' that will take power away from politicians and give it to people, encouraging volunteerism, while the Government still plays its role, as required. The aim has been to be cost-effective and save money. This textbook, written by 27 American public health scholars and practitioners, uses the same principle in developing successful community health campaigns and services.

The message is that the work of community health and public health development is both science and art. On the one hand, it grows from lessons and experiences learned by community activists and public health professionals in trying to create public systems, programmes, interventions and policy that improve the life and health of everyone in the communities targeted. On the other hand, it stems from the passion for social justice, equity and fairness that can lead to the creation of truly healthy communities where all citizens, regardless of their cultural, religious and ethnic backgrounds or circumstances, receive healthcare that they need. …
