Boosey & Hawkes has issued Singing in German, third in the series called The Boosey Voice Coach: Learning through Repertoire, selections and notes by British vocal coach/director Mary King. This series presents a different kind of package from any other art song folio on the market. King offers fifteen to twenty of her favorite songs in each language, providing notes and coaching comments for each piece, which cover translation, background information, diction, ornamentation, storytelling, vowel modification, phrasing, and tempo and rhythmic issues, along with other excellent tidbits. She has chosen both tried and true repertoire and unusual gems of interest. For example, in the new German volume, she includes standards such as Bach's "Bist du bei mir," Mozart's "Das Veilchen," and Brahms's "Feldeinsamkeit," as well as harder to find songs like Mendessohn's "Andres Maienlied," Gruber's "Rauchlied," and Waxman's "Allein in einer großen Stadt. …
