This excellent monograph investigates the relationship between prose and verse in this most famous Spanish version of the Troy romance, and demolishes a number of myths in doing so. It concludes that the late thirteenth- or early fourteenth-century text is most closely related to Benoit de Sainte-Maure's Roman de Troie rather than the Roman de Troie en prose, and suggests that the extant version of the Historia Troyana polimetrica is an abridgement of a longer original. However, there is no evidence that the Spanish original would have been entirely in verse; rather it seems to have been a prosimetrum. A close reading of the verse passages shows that they amplify the original source and add courtly and Christian-moralizing elements (this didacticism is also a feature of the prose passages); the poetic lamentation and prophecy passages receive particularly illuminating interpretation. …
