Glaciers: The politics of ice Jorge Daniel Taillant Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2015 360pp, 16x24cm Hb: £19.99, ISBN 978-0-19-936725-2

'We protect what we know' is asserted by the author on numerous occasions in Glaciers: The politics of ice. Jorge Taillant has successfully produced a book which would boost glacial understanding for a reader of any level.

The book follows an interesting structure. In the odd-numbered chapters Taillant follows the development of the first glacier protection laws, and the fight against the impact of mining on glaciers in the 2000s. The evennumbered chapters begin by explaining the basics of glaciers, before the author passionately and successfully argues the necessity of protecting glaciers. Amazing glacier stuff (Chapter 8) contains a fascinating compilation of glacier facts, from creating a glacier in your freezer to dynamiting glaciers.

This book would be an excellent choice for extra-curricular reading for both A-level and undergraduate students. …
