Historia del Ministerio Hispano en la Iglesia Episcopal. By Isaías Rodríguez. (Atlanta, Diocese of Atlanta, Pp. 124. $15.00. 2 for $20.00.)

This is a seminal review of the history of Hispanic ministry in the Episcopal Church, by a long-time active and knowledgeable clergy participant in that history. While this is not an academic treatise, details of particular documents, and the names of key participants are integral to this historical summary. The author has written several historical surveys on other topics which have been wellreceived within the Hispanic community. He writes with clarity, skill, and knowledge.

The book opens with a quick summary of Anglicanism in the Latino world, and follows with histories of diocesan ministries of the Episcopal Church in Latino countries. The succeeding chapters relating events in segments of decades seem a bit to episodic and unrelated. In this the author is not to be faulted, because he has accurately depicted the history which was pursued in an ad hoc manner, and without planning. The often-disconnected events illustrate the reality of a history. In truth, the history of this ministry is filled with episodic and uncoordinated efforts. Because of the reality of the events depicted, Rodriguez does not pretend to find unifying themes, or theologies.

While the author participated in many of the events he summarizes, the presentations are unbiased and accurate. In addition to the data, he identifies purposes and goals of major events, and presents these with the identification of their strengths and weaknesses. …
