Good News: A Scriptural Path to Reconciliation, By Steven Charleston. (Cincinnati: Forward Movement, 2014, Pp. vii, 62. $4.00.)

In a small, slim volume from Forward Movement, Stephen Charleston has crafted in Good News: A Scriptural Path to Reconciliation a workbook for use in Christian congregations experiencing conflict or dissension. Charleston's premise is that disagreement and dissension is a natural part of live in all denominations and in all congregations. The Gospel of Jesus Christ, Charleston maintains, provides the "stepping stones, [the] path out of anger into peace" (viii). There is no conflict so great, Charleston assert, that the wisdom and witness of Jesus Christ cannot draw people together.

The book consists of a brief introduction, four chapters or exercises, and a leader's guide for facilitating the sessions. While the text is designed for group use, Charleston also suggests its usefulness for individuals. Good News draws from the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, but does not ever offer a scriptural citation in order to structurally witness against the habit of proof-texting from the scriptures. Never citing a passage, Charleston maintains, allows this gospel path of reconciliation to work such that individuals to "see yourself within the story of Christ rather than to see the story of Christ from within your own opinions" (x). The Good News process for reconciliation consists of four Gospel principles or signposts, on which each chapter is based: finding common ground in Jesus Christ; searching for truth together; living in peace with one another; learning to be community (10). …
