This publication is the latest in the Boosey & Hawkes Voice Coach series already available for French (2009) and English (2007) song literature. British vocal coach Mary King has selected the songs and provided the notes included in this volume aimed at the young singer. An analysis of each song is provided., first for text and text analysis, including the poem and a literal translation, then notes, or performance guidance, German diction, and finally, skills, or technical advice. King's writing style is breezy, informative, and friendly, a perfect tone for the young singer making a first foray into singing classical repertoire in the German language. She clearly regards art songs as "mini-dramas," and encourages singers to approach them as an opportunity to employ both vocal color in their storytelling and careful research in their preparation. King's notes on diction for each song go further than many diction guides for the beginning singer. …
