A young friend and his lovely wife from Peru

want to lead a community hike through the mountains there.

I have always dreamed of going to Machu Picchu.

I keep on dreaming that I'm still 24.

We're at our pal Marv's old fishing shack on Cape Cod.

Its stairway is steep, so I'm glad there are railings to cling to.

My knees are 71 years old as I write.

God knows, I'll never climb to Machu Picchu.

I have five small grandchildren now. I had to stay

alive this long to love them. The youngest one

is eight weeks old and smiling. There are seals in the bay

each time we friends go fishing. Today at dawn,

I watched a sanderling flit to the beach and nab

a hermit crab. There's a loud osprey nest by the landing.

Soon the chicks will fly off, on their own, but come to that,

why haven't they done so already, October looming? …
