A Sense of Gnomesense!

Article excerpt

Bridget Rountree and Iain Gunn are the creators behind the Animal Cracker Conspiracy Puppet Company (A.C.C.), and they have been creating hybrid experimental puppetry in San Diego and beyond since 2006. A.C.C.'s relationship with the La Jolla Playhouse began in 2014 when they did a workshop of their multi-media puppet theatre piece Paper Cities, which explores the conceptualizing of a city through collective memory and paper. They use recyclables to create various sizes and styles of puppets, including marionettes, large puppets, table-top puppets, shadow puppets, and masks. These are operated in worlds developed with facets of toy theatre, object theatre, stop-motion film, and projections to create their performances. Their project for WoW Festival 2015, Gnomesense: A Puppet Happening in the Garden, is quite different from their experimental work. In Gnomesense!, they use traditional échasse (or peg stilt) characters, giant puppets, physical comedy, and a haphazard three-piece band to create a fantastical street theatre performance that enchants families in the Festival's central village.

Gnomesense! is also a part of WoW's family friendly programming. Specifically, it is one of the suggested performances for young audience members who have joined the "exclusive" Society of Creative Thinkers, a group of young explorers who are searching for the creativity that has gone missing. They have taken on The Quest described as, "part scavenger hunt, part role play and full of clue-solving challenges-The Quest is a mysterious and epic mission to save creativity in the world!"
