Twelve poems depict the powerful, lyrical, and playful nature of animals in their everyday habitats. In English and in Spanish, Julie Paschkis's poetry and art serenade readers in both languages. The beauty of the carefully selected language, crafted in Spanish first and then in English per Paschkis, produces expressive and performative lines that evoke a dreamlike journey alongside nature's creatures. Paschkis writes of a whale as a "ballena bailarina" that dances with the enormous ocean in a dazzle of bubbles. She similarly animates a snake as a "serpiente sinuosa" that writes slippery poems with his body. "But his alphabet is/too simple./He only knows/one/letter: ssssssssss."

The collection is clearly meant to be read aloud, in English and in Spanish, and would be a delight for our youngest readers to perform orally, with the dual language poems placed on opposing pages. …
