Article excerpt

Silver gelatin the fine outline of the window sash at dawn

but morning turned blind eyes to us nor could

I see you Sleep had cobwebbed you like a pharaoh

and later when we walked in the frozen field we cracked every mirror

Swamp grasses ticked against each other

Metallic puddles showed us nothing not even our shadows

My shadow asked your shadow where was the lost child

Mahler said for a soft sound don't give it to the oboe but

only to some monster instrument that must struggle and force

beyond its natural range to murmur or hum

We outpaced our shadows We were looking for the place

where light would cry out when ice sliced its hands

but we found instead the crimson reishi fungus ruffled in its

petticoat

Ganoderma lucidum from which a healing tea could be boiled

though we abstained left it on its stump and returned with our palms empty

hungry for night eager

for another dawn
