Sal is a gray circus elephant. When the circus comes to town, Ben becomes best friends with her even though she is an elephant and he is a young boy. They become friends mostly because Ben's mom just died and she loved elephants too. I thought this book had both sad and funny parts. I \vas disappointed that Ben ignored his friend, Dunk, when the circus came to town because I thought the author could have both of the boys become friends with Sal the elephant. In fact, that part reminded me of times when my friends have ignored me.

The story is fiction because Sal can talk with Ben. Sometimes, though, you forget that it's not two people talking together. It is really a story of a great friendship and I think the author's message to the reader is that even short time friends can be best friends. …
