It's no wonder Venus is in distress.

She's watching devils being impaled

on tridents while the plutocrats sob.

But I won't panic. Discretion suggests

I take it easy, so I decide to make a dash

in my spiffy sports car, escape the dross.

Driving up the coast road is always

a chance for me to relax obsessions

and make progress on redemption.

And I know of nowhere better

than Sausalito to drown yesterday's

sorrows in a sea of contentment.

Fifty miles of serenity is soaked

into my tousled heart as I cruise

past beaches with tangy names,

Bean Hollow, Miramar, Pescadero.

A stop at Nick's in Pacifica allows

a stunning ocean view, and solitude.

And then across San Francisco,

past Stern Grove where in summer

people flock for delightful concerts.

Eventually the Golden Gate shows

it's awesome towers through clouds.

I cross it, gazing down at the big bay.

A stone's throw from the other side

of the Golden Gate lies Sausalito,

a Mecca of sorts for people in need

of respite from life's adamant grind.

Once there I locate a seat at the tony

Cafe Tutti, applaud the banjo player.

And then I traipse over to the dock

from which ferry boats zigzag the bay,

close to Treasure and Angel Islands.

Near to shore a little white sailboat

almost seems anchored on the water

this windless day, as if totally inert.

Calypso music fills the voluminous air

as pigeons with iridescent feathers

at the public park peck, bob their heads. …
