It was my last day of clinical rotation in the ICU and I was still feeling like a novice as I read through a list of a dozen medications that I would be administering to my patient over the next 12 hours. I knew my preceptor would be coming around and asking me the usual questions - standard dose, administration methods, drug interactions and incompatibilities, mechanism of action, side effects and adverse reactions. The ICU's tattered drug guide was nowhere in sight, and I needed to get moving.

So I dug into my pocket, pulled out my PDA and fired up ePocrates, an electronic drug guide that is often used by health care professionals, including my own doctor, but rarely used by students, at least at my school. I ticked off each of the meds I was looking at for this patient and ran ePocrates' drug interaction tool. Within a couple of seconds, I knew everything I needed to know about interactions among these drugs. A few more clicks, and I had the complete rundown on all the specifics on each med, and I was ready to get on with my day.

As a second degree BSN student in a 12-month accelerated program at George Mason over the past year, I've had little time for chasing after scarce drug guides at my clinical sites. …
