Alice Colby-Hall, whose valuable work on the vernacular texts that form the long cycle of Guillaume d'Orange is well known to scholars of the chanson de geste, here presents an edition of the Latin vita of the irascible Carolingian warrior turned saint. Drawing on twelfth-century manuscripts, and using five witnesses in total, Colby-Hall presents a modern critical edition: the first edition of the Vita Sancti Willelmi since the seventeenth century. Her modern French translation helps to make the text accessible not only to specialist scholars, but also to students and other interested readers. In a very useful introduction, Colby-Hall outlines what is known about the historical William of Orange, who fought for both Charlemagne and Louis the Pious, halted the advancements of the Moors around Narbonne and forced them back into the Iberian peninsula, and eventually withdrew to the Abbey of Gellone, which he founded, and where he maintained a reputation for sanctity and asceticism. …
