The Anglo-Norman verse life of Edmund the Martyr composed by Denis Piramus in the late twelfth century was, until the 1970s, thought to have survived in a single, incomplete copy. In 1975, however, Manchester's John Rylands Library announced the purchase of a second witness, hitherto unknown to scholarship. As William Rothwell quickly established, MS French 142 (as it is now known) preserves some 900 additional lines of the poem (though it, too, is incomplete) and, as an early fourteenth-century production, pre-dates the sole copy previously available to editors.
