The Songe - perhaps one of the most important political allegories of the later Middle Ages in France - was last published by Coopland in 1969, from a late and, as the editor himself recognizes, inferior manuscript; this monumental edition is a welcome, and overdue, replacement, for which we are indebted to the extraordinary diligence of Joel Blanchard who published a translation in 2008 (and who, of course, has worked extensively on the political writings of the late Middle Ages). Blanchard uses the crucial MS Paris, Arsenal 2682-3, contemporary with Philippe himself and which may well have occasional notes by the author himself.
