Bede composed three major commentaries on the 'image of the temple', De tabernaculo (based on Exodus xxiv.12- xxx.21), De templo (based on III Kings v-vii), and the Esdras commentary, as well as dedicating four homilies to the subject. Conor O'Brien offers a wide-ranging interpretation of this significant body of early eighth-century exegesis, structured thematically and moving 'from the macrocosm of the temple as history and cosmos [chapters 3 and 4], through the temple as Christ [chapter 5] and his body the Church [chapter 6], to the microcosm of the temple as individual [chapter 7]'. He combines his presentation of Bede's thought overall, stressing his achievement as an exegete drawing on patristic tradition, with a particular concern for the intellectual and historical environment in Wearmouth-Jarrow. …
