The current issue comprises five research papers, a book review and an obituary.

Prof. Dr. Abdul Azim Isla h i (Saudi Arabia) has tried to provide a balanced view about the reasons of the backwardness of the Middle East in modern times in his paper entitled "What did hold back the Middle East? The thesis of the long divergence revisited". Similar economic concessions granted to the European colonialists produced even worst disastrous results particularly in South Asia and Far East, whose effects are still felt.

The second article, "The Emergence of Religious Elites in Modern Afghanistan (1919-1929)" by Dr. Ghulam Shams-ur-Rehman (Pakistan) dilates upon the ulema groups gaining ascendency vis-à-vis modernising efforts of Amir Aman Allah who was forced to abdicate and leave the country.

Ms. Munazza Batool (Pakistan) studies the Hindu-Muslim dichotomy and mutual interaction in her article "Süfïs of the Indian subcontinent and their views of Hinduism". …
