What's on the menu?

This poster was presented in January 2015 during the annual PhD poster competition of the Erasmus School of Law, Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Netherlands. In this annual presentation PhD candidates of the Erasmus School of Law are asked to present their research project in a conference poster format to their colleagues of the Faculty. For my poster I however choose to approach this task in a less conventional way. The format of the poster is not according to the classical standards of a conference poster. There is for example too much text and little use of models and figures. The aim was however to have the poster resemble a Chinese restaurant menu in the Netherlands of the 80's, which is current day often still in use by Dutch Chinese restaurants. In picture A you find two existing examples of Dutch Chinese menu's. Next to having the poster hanging, I also had the poster printed and folded like a take away menu. You find photographed samples in picture B. The aim of the format of the poster was to confront people with the fact that the research that I am conducting is not a far from their bed show. That labor relations and conditions in Chinese restaurants are also influenced by consumers who purchase (cheap) food. With this poster I aimed to address this issue by drawing from something conventional as a menu card and add to it an extra layer of meaning by presenting my research project in it which addresses harsh labour relations and conditions. …
