A Study on the Impact of Nurturing Strengths Values and Gratitude in Classrooms for Empowering Young Mind

Article excerpt

"Psychology is must larger than curing mental illness or curing diseases. I think it's about bringing out the best in people; it's aboutpositive institutions; it's about strength ofcharacter. "

Martin Seligman

"Education is not the amount of information that we put into your brain and runs riot there, undigested, all your life. We must have life building, man making, and character making assimilation of ideas. If you have assimilated five ideas and made them your life and character, you have more education than any man who has got by heart a whole library"

Swami Vivekananda

Any study on positive education would not have been completed without mentioning the words and vision of the greatest teacher world has ever seen, and we Indians are proud of, Swami Vivekananda. There are certain values that are extremely necessary for life, but which are generally ignored by modern system of education. Today's education fails to mould the character of the youth they need to learn the steps to rise in life and hold themselves up right. Swami Vivekananda, believed education is the manifestation of perfection already in men. He thought it a pity that the existing system of education did not enable a person to stand on his own feet, nor did it teach him self-confidence and self-respect. To Vivekananda, education was not only collection of information, but something more meaningful; he felt education should be man-making, life giving and character-building. To him education was an assimilation of noble ideas. Positive education according to Swami Vivekananda 'Education means that process by which character is formed, strength of mind is increased, and intellect is sharpened, as a result of which one can stand on one's own feet. Character is the foundation for self-development.

Positive education closely linked to character strengths and values. We observe the present situation of our society sincerely; we can see that very dangerous anti-social activities, immoral activities, corruptions etc. are happening here and there in our society, and impressions of these activities have come into the system of education at school, college and university level. Consequently, we can see that teachers are sleazing by their students inside and outside of the school today. They have no moral values to judge you that what is right or wrong. Lack of morality, weak character and lack of attitude of gratitude has caused the world to suffer a lot and see own daughters and sisters in distress.

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.

Nelson Mandela

Raising kids with strong concepts of right and wrong is one of the biggest teaching and parenting goal. Class rooms should be supportive in nurturing character strengths, it is thus imperative that teachers be trained with the skills of well-being. Strengths can be described in lots of different ways. Here, we are talking about strengths of character. Your character is what makes you the person you are. It is about how you relate to other people and the world around you. When you are using your true strengths, you feel full of energy. Good comes only when children feel that they are valued and they have something in them. Positive emotions are good for children because they stretch the imagination. When children do something they enjoy or find interesting, they are more likely to persevere in the face of challenges, and spontaneously search for more creative solutions and opportunities. Positive emotions can also help undo negative ones.

Results and discussion

It is suggested that a person cannot only possess strengths, but also enhance his or her own strengths as well as develop new ones (Biswas-Diener, Kashdan, & Minhas, 2011). However, if ignored "our strengths can atrophy, much in the same way that a muscle, if not used, may wither" (Jones-Smith, 2011). Character strengths are substantially stable, universal personality traits that manifest through thinking (cognition), feeling (affect), willing (conation or volition), and action (behaviour). …
