Clinical Problem: Cancer Biopsy

Article excerpt

Dear Editor-in-Chief

A letter to the editor entitled "Cancer Biopsy in Ancient Persian Medicine: Do or Not to Do!" was published in Iran J Public Health (1). I would like to focus attention on authors' suggestion for using non-invasive methods such as laboratory parameters and biomarkers, for tumor detection.

Advancements in oncology resulted in develop-ment of different protocols for cancer treatment. Accordingly, accurate diagnosis base on patho-logic specimen is very important particularly to select a suitable treatment protocol and therefore, doing tumor biopsy is inevitable. Although con-cern for tumor seeding during biopsy still exists but several studies, for instance (2-4) have found that, its likelihood is very low. Furthermore, ad-vantages of correct cancer diagnosis is would usually weigh more than potential risks of biopsy (3, 4).
