Les Enfances Vivien is a text with an extremely complex manuscript tradition. There are eight complete manuscripts extant, all cyclical, one substantial fragment, and two prose manuscripts, so it is not surprising that this is the first modern edition of the complete text. The cyclical nature of the manuscripts compounds the classification problems. Rouquier adopts Nordfelt's stemma (given on p. x of Let. Enfances Vivien, ed. C. Wahlund and H. von Feilitzen (Paris, 1895)). The base manuscript was chosen from the a family, which has provided the base manuscript for the editors of other Guillaume texts; we are thus provided with a series of editions which together form a cycle. Within the group of manuscripts Rouquier rejects A 3 on the rather weak grounds that it is a more recent copy (recent does not necessarily mean less reliable). A4 and A1 are rejected on better grounds, leaving A2, which contains two lacunae, one of which is filled from Ai, the other from A1. On the basis of the information given it is unclear why both lacunae could not have been filled from the same manuscript, although As does lack one line of the lacuna filled from A1. …
