In this study, Leopoldo Funes applies to historical works produced for Alfonso X of Castile techniques derived from narrative discourse analysis, hampered in part by the incompleteness of the principal text examined in detail, the Estoria de Espana (EE). He also makes some reference to the (also incomplete) General estoria. The first part of the book provides a clear and useful summary of current views of the EE in which Funes is not afraid to amend standard opinions. In the second and most substantial part of the work, there are analyses of a mixed bag of topics from within the section of the EE 'completed' under Alfonso's guidance: narrative markers; Dido and Aeneas; the use of personages; the Moorish invasion and Covadonga; the story of Mainete, derived, in the opinion of Funes, from an epic. In addition, Funes proceeds to analyse other material based on prosifications of epic, particularly the use of the first cantar of the Poema de mio Cid, from chronicle texts derived from sources intended for use in preparation of the EE. …
