UK businesses could be wasting as much as L 18,000 a year to maintain unused desks, claims MWB BusinessExchange, one of the leading suppliers of managed offices and workplace solutions.

"The average UK employee spends almost two months away from work through holiday entitlement and sick leave," claims Philip Dodson, MWB BusinessExchange's sales and marketing director, "Which means that companies employing ten or more people will have the equivalent of at least one desk vacant all year round. Add this to increases in parental leave and business travel, and the empty desk in the corner soon becomes a business liability, "

Research by MWB BusinessExchange found that the cost of maintaining unused workstations on conventional property leases can be considerable. Taking into account heating, lighting, maintenance, depreciating equipment and, of course, rent and rates, the average cost of running a desk in the UK is L35* a day.

"The traditional method of renting office space by the square foot no longer reflects how smaller goahead businesses operate," continues Dodson. …
