The French Dominican Stephen of Bourbon worked on his immense 'Treatise on diverse materials for preaching' during the period c.1250-61. As it survives (in five manuscripts), it consists of five parts, organized according to the first five Gifts of the Holy Spirit: fear, piety, knowledge, might, and counsel. Parts one and three, 'De dono timoris' and 'De dono scientiae et penitentiae', were published as CCCM XXIV and XXIXB in 2002 and 2006 by Jacques Berlioz of the Centre national de la recherche scientifique in Paris, and part two, 'De dono pietatis', now fills the gap. Like the other parts, the 'Gift of Piety' is subdivided into numbered subsections ('tituli'), in this case the Word of God, Divine Mercy, the Incarnation of Christ, the Passion of Christ, the Cross, the Holy Virgin, and the Works of Mercy, each of which is in turn divided into chapters into which the numerous 'exempla', 'similitudines, 'rationes', and 'auctoritates', with which the preacher is invited to illustrate the relevant theme are integrated. …
