The end of the Middle Ages saw a rise in the production of educational works for women, not only religious but also secular. Among such works can be found the Lletra a sa filla Joana de càstig e de bons nodriments, written by Alfons el Vell and now completely studied and edited by Professor Rosanna Cantavella. Alfons el Veil, who held the crown of Aragon during his last days, is an interesting character of fourteenth-century politics. As well as an effective negotiator, he was also interested in reading and producing literary works, and the Lletra is particularly representative of this passion. Written in 1392 to his daughter Joana as a result of her forthcoming marriage, it represents a perfect example of an educational complement to a woman duty bound to work at home, 'quan ix de la casa del pare e de la mare anant a la casa del marit' ('when she leaves her father's and mother's home and to go to that of her husband'). …
