Knossos, Crete

At first I couldn't fathom why

it seemed to bring me close to you,

every time I walked this thread of road

towards Mount Juktas.

What could be the link between

these olive groves outside Knossos

and a farm in coastal Queensland long ago?

Until I noticed how the mountain's

shape, the farms about its base

were similar to your mountain-

Barmoya-that you made your muse;

and realized you'd more than likely

feel at home here, as I do.

There's a rainbow at my back,

framing mountains I can't name;

at my feet, a puddle of blue

sky with scumbled rags of gray;

far to the east, fresh snowfalls

glisten on the summits of Lassithi;

plumb on the horizon, Juktas-

inscrutable, opaque-is deepening

to lapis as the daylight fades. …
